FC Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong will soon agree on the extension of the 28-year-old player's contract. In a chat with the Dutch portal 'Voetbal Zone', the '21' of Barcelona conveyed confidence about his future in Hansi Flick's team.

"I think I'm going to renew for Barça. I can't be one hundred percent sure, but if everything goes well, it will be done. My intention is to renew this summer, but we'll see what happens," the midfielder began by saying.

In the last few hours, the footballer's decision to change agent has been leaked, a key factor in unlocking negotiations with the Barcelona team. However, Frenkie avoided giving a specific date to the 'summit' that will resolve his continuity in Barcelona.

The '21' ends his contract in 2026 and, for now, maintains one of the highest salaries in the squad (19 million euros gross, plus bonuses). However, his continuity is endorsed by the coaching staff and the club's board, although there is no defined date for now. The club, however, prioritizes having everything resolved before June 30.

De Jong is clear: he wants to continue making history in Barcelona

"It's a negotiation and you can't say when. The important thing is that both parties want it and I think we will reach an agreement," added the Arkel native. A couple of weeks ago, Joan Laporta himself made clear his intention to resolve the Dutchman's new contract soon, whom he considers a fundamental piece in the squad.

"He is one of those who maintains Barça's style of play. He is from the Ajax school. He has a lot of personality... He has recovered and we are working on his renewal," explained the Barcelona president.

In that sense, De Jong also expressed his excitement about becoming, next season, the player from his country with the most official matches for Barça. "I will be able to reach Phillip Cocu as the Dutchman with the most matches for Barcelona," he assured in his chat with 'VZ'.

For the moment, Frenkie is 33 matches away from Cocu (292) and, ahead of him, only the current coach of the Netherlands, Ronald Koeman (264), appears. Since his arrival in Catalonia in 2019, the '21' has played 259 official matches in which he has scored 19 goals, 23 assists and 6 titles (2 Leagues, 2 Copa del Rey and 2 Spanish Super Cups).

Frenkie's new contract, a problem for Barça?

Despite the high salary, Barça is confident in updating De Jong's salary this month thanks to several pending income. On the one hand, the club is waiting for the 'ok' from its auditor, Crowe, together with LaLiga, to the 100 million euros derived from the sale of the exploitation rights of 475 VIP seats of the new Spotify Camp Nou.

This operation is key for Barça to return to the 1:1 rule in the summer market. In addition, the team will free up salary margin with the departures of Ansu Fati (Mónaco) and Clément Lenglet (Atlético), along with the possibility of entering several extra millions for the possible transfers of Pau Víctor, Pablo Torre and Andreas Christensen himself.

All this will give Barcelona enough 'Fair Play' to amortize Frenkie's renewal, as well as Lamine Yamal's. The club also hopes to extend Eric García's contract soon, another of those who may be free in 2026.
